Changing
diapers in public can be a dilemma for the average parent,
and the inventors of the BabyDeck™ Stroller Ken
Chuah and Jane Khor are no exception.
One hot summer, while attending a family reunion in
a San Antonio theme park with their first baby Ethan,
3 months, Ken and Jane found themselves struggling to
locate a restroom. When they finally did find it, the
line was extremely long. After a lengthy wait in line,
they entered a filthy restroom with a dirty changing
table. Since Ethan’s diaper needed to be changed
every two hours, this became an unbearable situation.
They hoped this experience would be limited to the theme
park. However, at the mall with a group of family members,
Jane found herself having walk to the restroom at the
other end of mall on numerous occasions while the rest
of the party waited. At home, they learned that even
their favorite, privately owned, downtown restaurant
was not equipped with a changing table in its restroom.
Experiences like these in the ensuing months forced
Ken and Jane to make a tough decision. They sold their
compact car for an SUV in the hope that the more spacious
interior would offer them a place to change Ethan’s
diapers when they ran errands or made public outings.
They soon realized that this was a temporary solution
to the complex problem of changing diapers in public
places, especially when the SUV was parked at a great
distance such as at the mall. The problem intensified
when they took a vacation abroad. Many countries do
not provide facilities for parents with babies and small
children. At one point, Ken and Jane were forced to
change Ethan’s diaper on the floor of the subway
station. In other cases, they changed it on the floor
in the corner of a bookstore or at odd places in tourist
hot spots, that is, as long as the location was clean.
This perpetual dilemma became the impetus that drove
the invention of the BabyDeck™ Stroller. Ken and
Jane decided that only a portable changing station would
do and that, since the stroller is a necessity for any
parent who goes outdoors with their babies, the design
would be a perfect fit.
